Just like with “coffee” that I just posted about over HERE – The debate goes on!
With milk, that is.
There’s been a steady decline in the consumption of cow’s milk for several years. Most of it due to lactose-intolerance, other allergies or health reasons (i.e. skin concerns).
Here’s a mini-breakdown of non-COW milk in order of (what I believe is) popularity, if not longevity:
Soy– most commonly substituted; highest amount of protein compared with milk alternatives; contains isoflavones; make sure there’s no added sugar; pesticides are commonly used to grow soybeans so check for that
Almond– very popular, plant based, less saturated fat than cow’s and more unsaturated fats; low in calories and protein; be aware of the added sugar that companies may add to improve flavor, texture or shelf life; it separates in hot drinks
Coconut – great alternative; there are TWO types- the milk that I’m referring to is more liquid, water-y than the coconut milk that is traditionally used for baking and is much thicker; this milk is low in calories and low in sugar (if unflavored) but it’s also low in protein too
Rice– contains almost no protein; good for people that want a low fat, non-cow’s milk substitute or if they cannot drink soy or almond milks; However the carbs are high and the calories can be too
Cashew– easy to make at home and often is; it tastes a little thicker and creamier than almond milk with less calories too
Nut blends– Trader Joes makes a nut blend that is tasty and not high in fats!
Oat– not suitable for people going GF (unless homemade from GF oats); highest amount of calories and carbs; still less calories than cow’s; good for hot beverages; creamy, mild flavor
Hemp– lower in calories and protein than cow’s. More protein than almond; won’t separate in hot liquids; high in polyunsaturated fats; can be chalky
Quinoa– never tried these, have you?
Spelt– same as above

Do you drink regular milk, plant-based milk or abstain from dairy?
Why or why not?
And as usual, any questions? Please leave them in the comments!
