“10 Years, 0 Physical Activity Gains (And It Gets Worse)”

So reads the beginning of my PT News edition for 8/10/19.

The Journal of the American Medical Association published a study in it’s Open Network that concluded that Americans were NOT (and are not) any more physically active than they were 10 years ago.

We are more sedentary than ever.

Do you consider yourself more or less active than 10 years ago?

I think I am MORE active when it comes to structured exercise (and certainly teaching) but I am sitting more, in general, throughout the work day.

The study goes on to show that most Americans aren’t even meeting the minimum guidelines established for physical activity for a week.

The highest percentage of sedentary folks were those that were already obese and those with college or higher educations.

While the trend is certainly alarming, there are some subgroups that have made incremental progress: women (yay!) and individuals 65 years old & over.

“Both insufficient [PA] and prolonged sedentary time are associated with a high risk of adverse health outcomes, including chronic diseases and mortality,” the authors wrote. The need for public awareness and health efforts toward reducing sedentary time were stressed.

We have a WAYS to go.

Let’s support each other’s efforts to be HEALTHY!
